UNIT 05 - Simple Harmonic Motion

EXPECTATIONS -- Before we start this unit you should:

  • be comfortable with the basic shape of sine/cosine graphs
  • be comfortable doing basic trig calculations using radians


At the end of this unit, I will be able to:

♦ Define simple harmonic motion -- and why we use the term 'simple'

♦ Define and calculate angular velocity

♦ Utilize the relationships between angular velocity and frequency and period

♦ Use Hooke's Law appropriately to solve both qualitative and quantitative problems

♦ Demonstrate understanding of the basic SHM equation: Asin(ωt)

    • demonstrate understanding that A = amplitude = displacement x (as used in Hooke's Law)
    • demonstrate further understanding of when and how to use ω (angular velocity)
