UNIT 05 - Astrobiology
  • EXPECTATIONS: Before we start this unit you should be very comfortable with the following:
  • recognize that astrobiology is a thriving area of study in science
  • recognize that there is no clear-cut scientific definition of "intelligence"
  • recall that the distances between stars make interstellar travel exceedingly difficult and very, very lengthy

LEARNING GOALS -- At the conclusion of this part of the unit, I will be able to:

      1. assess the likelihood for finding life somewhere in our own solar system including (but not limited to):
        • Europa
        • Enceladus
        • Mars
      2. relate the importance of studying extremophiles here on Earth to the search for life in our solar system:
        • Black Smokers (Hydrothermal Vents)
        • Chemosynthesis vs Photosynthesis
        • Life on Earth vs Life on Mars

    3) Life surviving vs life thriving
