Astronomy Picture Project

SUBMIT YOUR FINAL PROJECT HERE

Please select one set of pictures from the table below (some objects have obvious color schemes, some objects will require a WEE bit of research).

Click HERE (see especially the "Hubble Palette" at the bottom of the page) or HERE for an explanation of how different elements produce different colors of light (remember our gas tubes?)

NOTE: BE SURE TO SAVE YOUR WORK EARLY AND OFTEN IN YOUR STUDENT FOLDER. WORK SAVED ON THE LIBRARY MACs IS DELETED FREQUENTLY. IF YOU SAVE YOUR WORK TO THE LOCAL COMPUTER IT WON'T SURVIVE AND YOU'LL BE MIGHTY UPSET

Choose an object from the list below.

As you download each file, be SURE to name it appropriately based on the element that is present in the file name.

For example:

Take a look at this filename:

https://wolgemuthe.psd401.net/astro/06%20Light/images/photoshop/carina/carina00-hst-h-gray.jpg

Notice the actual filename at the end:

carina00-hst-h-gray.jpg

  • The object name is carina
  • The object was photographed using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)
  • The photograph was taken in h light-- meaning hydrogen(red-- see key above)
  • So I would suggest naming that file carina_red

PHOTOSHOP HELP is HERE

For a successful photo project you should:

1) Strive to bring out the MOST detail you can from each of your images

  • Clicking on the layer name area in the lower right of the screen brings up a very helpful screen. Use that to change opacity and other features
  • Changing Hue/Sauration, Contrast/Brightness will be helpful
  • If you are comfortable, consider using the 'magnetic lasso' tool to zero in on specific regions and work with those
  • Notice that you can move the layers by dragging them above and below

2) Provide a smooth blending of all of your images

3) Try to avoid distractions

4) Artistic interpretations are fine as long as they don't conflict with the above criteria

Overall Presentation
The sum of the layers is significantly more enhanced than the layers individually (3 pts)
The sum of the layers is slightly more enhanced than the layers individually    (2 pts)
There is little or no difference between layers (1 pt)
Blending
The final image shows distinct qualities of all layers that greatly enhance the final image (3 pts)
Some blending occurs between all layers but some aspects are unclear or do not enhance the final image (2 pts)
blending layers was attempted     (1 pt)
Fine Detail
Multiple areas of the image show enhanced fine line details (3 pts)
One or two areas of the image show enhanced details (2 pts)
Enhanced detail was not successful (1 pt)
Brightness/ Contrast
Significant success was made on enhancing dark regions or reducing glare on bright areas without sacrificing the quality of the image (3 pts)
Some success was made on enhancing dark regions or reducing glare on bright areas but some sacrificing of the quality of the image occurs     (2 pts)
Attempts were made to manage bright or dark areas but significant washouts or dark regions remain   (1 pts)
Color Choice
Color choices enhance the quality of the image AND colors blend well together AND do not 'wash out' or overwhelm other color regions (3 pts)
Color choices enhance the quality of the image or colors blend well together or do not 'wash out' or overwhelm other color regions (2 pts)
Color choices distract from the quality of the image or colors do not blend well together or colors 'wash out' or overwhelm other color regions (1 pts)

One inactive layer is present (3 pts)

Two inactive layers are present (2 pts

When you make a substantial change to your image, you MUST document that by doing a screen shot and pasting that into a work document that you will submit to me later.
