UNIT 03 - Galaxies

EXPECTATIONS: Before we start this unit you should be very comfortable with he following:

Size & Scale:

Our solar system was formed about 5 billion years ago and it takes our fastest space ships more than 9 years to cover only half of it (From Earth to Pluto)

That space ship would take something like 100,000 years to get to our closest stellar (star) neighbor-- Alpha Centauri

A light year is almost unimaginably large to us puny humans-- 6 trillion miles.

Our Solar System is one of billions of solar systems in the Milky Way Galaxy

describe the various objects found in galaxies:

stars, nebulas, blue giant stars, red giant stars, white dwarf stars, red dwarf stars, black dwarf stars, brown dwarf stars, black holes, neutron stars, planets, comets and asteroids.

LEARNING TARGETS -- At the conclusion of this unit, I will be able to:

      1. Describe how galaxies form
      2. Sketch and classify the 3 main types of galaxies
      3. Explain how galaxies clump together into clusters and super-clusters
      4. Relate how super-clusters of galaxies are separated by super-voids
      5. Explain the concept of dark matter
      6. Relate the examples of WIMPS and MACHOs
