Design & Build

  • Sketch at least one preliminary design
    • include lengths for ALL lines
    • a scale MUST be included
  • Design your airplane using an engineering-type diagram.
    • All lines MUST be drawn using a straight-edge
    • Small curves can be hand-sketched but larger curves must be done using a protractor, compass or similar
    • Masses for each individual component MUST be included (in grams)
    • Additionally:
      • Fuselage mass must be indicated (in grams)
      • Tail mass must be indicated (in grams)
      • Wings mass must be indicated (in grams)
      • The overall mass of your plane MUST be clearly indicated (in grams)
    • The overall center of mass MUST be clearly indicated (make your best assessment)
    • The overall center of mass MUST work with your calculations. For example, if your fuselage has a mass of 12 grams and your tale has a mass of 5.0 grams, your center of mass shouldn't be right in the middle of your fuselage.

    20 pts total

Points will be deducted for each occurrence of:

    • freehand sketching
    • inaccurate measurements
    • missing measurements
    • missing units (EVERY number MUST have a unit present, no exceptions)
    • missing mass (with units-- see above)

     

  • Describe why you chose that particular design. Best descriptions will make reference to body length, wing length, shape of wings, shape of the body, appropriate re fences to the forces acting on the plane and related details. (2 paragraphs please)

Points will be deducted for each occurrence of:

    • inaccurate or vaguely written science descriptions
    • inaccurate or vaguely written engineering descriptions

Data and Calculations:

  • How far did your plane fly?
  • Describe the flight of your plane in terms of vertical motion
    • Describe the vertical forces acting on your plane that match the observations above
  • Describe the flight of your plane in terms of horizontal motion
    • Describe the vertical forces acting on your plane that match the observations above

NOTE: Flight must occur on the OFFICIAL CLASS course with Mr W watching

Plane flies less than 3.0 meters (0 pts)

Plane flies between 3.0 meters and 5.0 meters (1 pt)

Plane flies greater than 5.0 meters (2 pts)
