Well yes, it *IS* interesting and relevent for any class studying aircraft and flying, but it is ALSO a great opportunity to talk about our four forces and stalling.

 

Let's review on the whiteboard

Now let's go back to our control systems for a small, single engine plane (the Cessna!)

In terms of our four forces, what happens when we:

1) Pull the yoke back

2) Push the yoke down

3) Push on the right pedal

4) Push on the left pedal

Now let's do a wee bit of research and find out what happens when we turn the yoke to the right or left (In other words, why do we have to do that when we are using the pedals to turn?)

 

When we push on the right or left pedals they move cables that move the rudder (behind the tail) back and forth.

When we move the yoke back and forth, it moves the aileron (can you say ay-ler-on? I knew you could! <hah!>):

Why do you suppose it is that we need BOTH pedals (rudder) and yoke (aileron) to turn our Cessna?

 

Now let's talk about how that is similar and different from jet airlines
