UNIT 04 - ASTRONOMY

EXPECTATIONS -- Before we start this unit you should:

  • understand that the distances between stars is tremendous and would take tens or hundreds of thousands of years for humans to travel using current technologies

  • understand that planets are grouped into solar systems

  • stars are grouped into galaxies

  • understand that there is substantial evidence that indicates the universe was created in an event that occurred billions of years ago called 'the Big Bang'.

LEARNING GOALS -- At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. connect the life cycles of stars to the production of elements through the process of nucleosynthesis/fusion

  2. explain the Big Bang Theory including basic time line items:
    • Planck Time
    • Fundamental Particles Form
    • Stars/Galaxies Form
  3. explain evidence that supports the Big Bang theory including
    • Red Shift
    • Cosmic Background Radiation (CBR)
    • Formation of the elements
