Environmental Science - Nisqually Project & Reflection

Please open a Microsoft Word or Google Docs document.

  • Please title your document "Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge"
  • Please write your name and today's date underneath the title

*Please* do not cut and paste anything in this assignment, I'm most interested in your own thoughts and ideas, so don't worry too much about spelling and/or rammer*

If you get stuck on any of the following tasks, please just set it aside and then come back to it later.

1) Use the internet to research a bit about the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge.

  • Write two thoughtful paragraphs (3 - 5 thoughtful sentences) that describe why the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge was created.
    • Please also include thoughts and ideas from people who were very much in favor of creating the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge
    • Include also some thoughts and ideas who were opposed to creating the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge.

1) Find a picture/map/image that shows the layout of the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge and copy and paste that into your document

    • Make sure you can see where the I-5 highway is located
    • Please write a short paragraph (3 sentences or so) that describes the land above I-5
    • Now please write a short paragraph (3 sentences or so) that describes the land below I-5

2) Now please find a picture that shows the large trees that inhabit the upper part of the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge and copy and paste that into your document.

    • Please suggest the type of environment that MUST exist in that part of the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge using a THOUGHTFUL paragraph (3 - 5 thoughtful sentences)

3) Now please find a picture that shows the muddy/estuary part of the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge and copy and paste that into your document.

    • Take a few moments and brainstorm what sorts of plants and animals inhabit the muddy part of the estuary. You can just make a bulleted list if you life (try to include at least 5 types of animals and 3 types of plants you might find there)
    • Now go ahead and do a bit of research and find what types of plants and animals actually live in the muddy parts of the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge (if you get stuck, you might want to research muddy areas in other parts of Puget Sound) and add those to your list
