8:00 - Opening

SESSION #1: GOO LAB! (8:00 - 9:45)

OPENING QUESTION: What sort of items MUST the Gig Harbor Wastewater Treatment plant have to deal with? (not just the stuff that is SUPPOSED to go down the drain, but think of materials people DO put down the drain/toilet!)

WORDS OF THE SESSION:

  • Primary Treatment (screening/settling)
  • Seconday Treatment (bacteria)

WORK OF THE SESSION:

We'll prepare for Monday's field trip to the Gig Harbor Wastewater Treatment plant by seeing how well we can deal with simulated sewage here in the classroom.

Each group will get approximately 100 ml of 'goo' (vegetable oil, coffee grounds, garlic powder and water)

  • Vegetable oil simulates the oil in sewage that we humans give off from our skin and hair
  • Coffee grounds simulate biological and other solids
  • The garlic powder simulates the smell present in sewage

Working with the tools present in class, work to develop a plan to *treat* our simulated sewage.

The goal here is to identify areas of success and difficulty in actually treating sewage. Keep in mind, our methods have to be usable to treat tens or even hundreds of thousands of gallons that the Gig Harbor Treatment Plant has to process every day!

FIELD TRIP TO NISQUALLY (10:00 - 1:00)
*YIKES* looks like we had some trouble with traffic, so please work on your Nisqually Field Notes for the rest of the day
